The mission of the Department of Biomedical Sciences is to support the University of New England, College of Osteopathic Medicine’s efforts to transform medical students into health care leaders who advance patient-centered, high quality medical care for the people of Maine, New England, and the nation.
Faculty members in the Department of Biomedical Sciences provide leadership for the College and the University in all of their academic pursuits including education, research and scholarship, and service. The biomedical sciences faculty work closely with physicians and medical education specialists in developing innovative, case-based curriculum for the first- and second-year medical students. Moreover, the diversity of scientific interests within the department (and across the College and University) provides a stimulating intellectual environment for developing collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects that can span multiple medical and scientific topic areas.
With a strong emphasis on interprofessional education and patient-focused health care, many of the department’s faculty also teach in the Westbrook College of Health Professions, College of Pharmacy, and College of Dental Medicine.
