Microplastics as vectors for pathogen contamination of marine foods<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0Plastics are ubiquitous pollutants of marine environments.\u00a0\u00a0Of greatest concern are microplastics (MP), which are particles &lt; 5 mm, that can be ingested by marine organisms and are abundant within aquatic food webs,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Given that microbial biofilms are found on ocean-derived MP, we speculate that pathogen transfer from MP to ingesting aquatic organisms may occur.\u00a0\u00a0Our lab is examining the role of MP in mediating pathogen entry and retention in important marine organisms used for human\u00a0consumption\u00a0 by using finfish and bivalve shellfish models. Burkholder lab MS student, Abigail Blouch-Vigue, is tackling this for her MS project.  She partners with Mikayla Straube, MS student of the Byron lab in UNE&#8217;s Marine Science program.  Mikayla is studying whether rearing oysters in plastic-free aquaculture gear can reduce plastic load in the bivalve&#8217;s tissues.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>2.<strong><u> Polyphenol-mediated Inhibition of Staphylococcal biofilm formation<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The majority of bacterial infections are caused by biofilm-forming microbes.\u00a0\u00a0Since biofilms contribute to virulence, disease persistence and drug resistance, there is urgent need for anti-infection strategies directed at biofilm-forming pathogens.\u00a0\u00a0Our work examines the mechanisms by which polyphenolic compounds, commonly derived from terrestrial and marine natural sources, to impair biofilm formation by\u00a0<em>Staphylococcus epidermidis<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em>, two leading causes of biofilm-associated nosocomial infections.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>3. Food safety of edible seaweed<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The production and harvest of edible seaweed is the fastest-growing sector of the Maine aquaculture industry.\u00a0\u00a0However, since seaweed aquaculture is a relatively new industry in the U.S, there are no current guidelines for how seaweed should be handled and processed to minimize potential food safety risk.\u00a0\u00a0The Burkholder lab is collaborating with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.une.edu\/byronlab\/seaweed-project\/\">Byron lab\u00a0[KB1]<\/a>\u00a0in the UNE School of Marine and Environmental Programs to study the effect of post-harvest storage temperature and drying method on viability of bacterial pathogens associated with edible seaweed such as sugar kelp.\u00a0\u00a0This project is supported by an award from the Maine SeaGrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery aligncenter has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-byron-marine-ecology-lab wp-block-embed-byron-marine-ecology-lab\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"9M3ghuNc2k\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.une.edu\/byronlab\/seaweed-project\/\">Seaweed Food Safety<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Seaweed Food Safety&#8221; &#8212; Byron Marine Ecology Lab\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.une.edu\/byronlab\/seaweed-project\/embed\/#?secret=hz73cuUdiB#?secret=9M3ghuNc2k\" data-secret=\"9M3ghuNc2k\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
