Byron<\/strong> (School of Marine &amp; Environmental Programs; <a href=\"mailto:cbyron@une.edu\">cbyron@une.edu<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Kristin M. Burkholder<\/strong> (School of Biological Sciences; <a href=\"mailto:kburkholder@une.edu\">kburkholder@une.edu<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microplastics are ocean pollutants that can be ingested by filter feeding bivalves.&nbsp; Pathogens attach to buoyant microplastics, and these microplastics may aid microbial entry into marine foods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>M.S. Project 1<\/u><\/strong> will compare microplastic load in oysters reared in traditional plastic netting versus plastic-free gear.&nbsp;&nbsp; Oysters will be reared and collected on-farm, then brought to the laboratory to extract and quantify microplastics from oyster tissues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>M.S. Project 2<\/u><\/strong> will examine microplastic effect on pathogen entry into oysters. Microplastic-bacteria exposure experiments will be performed to examine the role of microplastics on microbial entry, colonization, and tissue dissemination within the oysters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Findings from both projects will help to inform best practices in bivalve cultivation and will aid in future strategies aimed at protecting microbiological safety of marine foods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maine Sea Grant funded project: 2024-2026 Role of microplastics in microbial colonization of oysters Faculty supervisors: &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":14,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"folder":[],"class_list":["post-1147","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
