In June, a group of interprofessional CUP AHEC Scholars participated in a correctional medicine rural health immersion at the Maine State Prison in Warren. Medical, pharmacy, public health, and dental hygiene students observed and engaged with correctional medicine professionals and prison residents. The students gained a better perspective of the health needs of the residents and the patient centered care provided at the prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center recently hosted four AHEC CUP Scholars. They participated in a weeklong Rural Health Immersion that brought them to rural and medically underserved areas of Penobscot County. While here, the students engaged in one-to-one discussions with current healthcare professionals and medical students at the hospital and participated in hands-on training in our Simulation Lab. They also partnered with PCHC Dental of Bangor, Indian Health Services on Indian Island, Stillwater Dental Associates of Bangor, and Millinocket Regional Hospital. The students attended an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at Bangor Area Recovery Network, volunteered at the Good Shepherd Food Bank, and with a nonprofit in Millinocket called, \u2018Our Kathadin,\u2019 a project to revitalize the area.
