{"id":1442,"date":"2020-07-23T12:50:23","date_gmt":"2020-07-23T12:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.une.edu\/research\/?p=1442"},"modified":"2020-07-23T12:50:23","modified_gmt":"2020-07-23T12:50:23","slug":"the-career-cost-of-covid-19-to-female-researchers-and-how-science-should-respond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.une.edu\/research\/the-career-cost-of-covid-19-to-female-researchers-and-how-science-should-respond\/","title":{"rendered":"The career cost of COVID-19 to female researchers, and how science should respond"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Some funders and journals are trying to support female researchers and others whose publications and positions are at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early data on the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on scientific-publishing output suggest that female researchers, particularly those at early-career stages,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-01294-9\">are the hardest hit<\/a>. Submissions to preprint servers, such as arXiv, rose more quickly for male authors than for female authors as nations adopted social-isolation measures. And female authors have accounted for only&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gh.bmj.com\/content\/5\/7\/e002922\">one-third of all authors on published COVID-19 papers&nbsp;<\/a>since January 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a consequence of the pandemic, female researchers\u2019 positions might be at risk.
