This event is funded by grant 6-ORIIR200065-01-01 from the Office of Research Integrity, Department of Health and Human Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program will focus on the knowledge gained during the past year, but also compare the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-nCoV\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)<\/a>&nbsp;challenges to other recent health crises, such as Zika and Ebola. The conference is in partnership with Weill Cornell Medicine, Hackensack Meridian Health, The Greater New York Hospital Association, and Ropes &amp; Gray, LLP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn light of the past year, we view COVID-19 as a learning opportunity for the research community that allows us to identify the risks unique to research integrity during any health emergency,\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/feinstein.northwell.edu\/institutes-researchers\/our-researchers\/bettie-m-steinberg-phd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bettie M. There will be an opening meeting, panel discussions and four workshops that will be tasked with developing best practices for the responsible conduct of research about specific topics. These include getting informed consent when patients are very ill and family are not physically present, conflicts between treating physicians and researchers and confirming the quality of data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Confirmed speakers include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/about-nih\/what-we-do\/nih-almanac\/michael-lauer-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michael Lauer, MD<\/a>, deputy director for Extramural Research, National Institutes of Health (NIH)&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jhsph.edu\/faculty\/directory\/profile\/3126\/arturo-casadevall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arturo Casadevall, MD, PhD<\/a>, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor and Chair, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Johns Hopkins University<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordhealthcare.org\/doctors\/s\/steven-shafer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steven Shafer, MD<\/a>, chair, Department of Anesthesia, Stanford University and member, Board of Directors, The Center for Scientific Integrity (CSI)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ropesgray.com\/en\/biographies\/b\/mark-barnes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark Barnes, JD<\/a>, partner, Ropes &amp; Gray<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic created significant challenges to conducting research,\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/feinstein.northwell.edu\/institutes-researchers\/our-researchers\/kevin-j-tracey-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kevin J. Tracey, MD<\/a>, president and CEO of the Feinstein Institutes. \u201cThis conference led by Dr. Steinberg, her team and national collaborators will provide us with valuable tools to face the next pandemic or health emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference will bring together medical professionals \u2013 including researchers, regulatory officers, Institutional Review (IRB) directors and members, institutional officials, trainees, clinicians, study coordinators, research pharmacists, research nurses, residents and fellows \u2013 &nbsp;and interested members of the public to discuss the challenges of conducting high quality ethical human subjects research during a health care emergency.
