Preliminary research in one region of Ireland documented a 73% decrease in very-low-birth-weight babies<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-02092-7?WT.ec_id=NATURE-20210805&amp;utm_source=nature_etoc&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=20210805&amp;sap-outbound-id=D7507D9AA7913D0D2A1F3B8BBDF4D5E7281983A4#ref-CR1\">1<\/a><\/sup>. And scientists in Denmark measured a roughly 90% country-wide drop in extremely premature births compared with the previous five years<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-02092-7?WT.ec_id=NATURE-20210805&amp;utm_source=nature_etoc&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=20210805&amp;sap-outbound-id=D7507D9AA7913D0D2A1F3B8BBDF4D5E7281983A4#ref-CR2\">2<\/a><\/sup>. In Nepal, however, researchers reported<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-02092-7?WT.ec_id=NATURE-20210805&amp;utm_source=nature_etoc&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=20210805&amp;sap-outbound-id=D7507D9AA7913D0D2A1F3B8BBDF4D5E7281983A4#ref-CR3\">3<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;that the risk of preterm birth \u2014 before 37 weeks of gestation \u2014 jumped by 30% during lockdown, a pandemic trend that scientists expect to find in other economically disadvantaged nations. In some countries, reports of increased numbers of stillbirths further complicated the picture<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-02092-7?WT.ec_id=NATURE-20210805&amp;utm_source=nature_etoc&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=20210805&amp;sap-outbound-id=D7507D9AA7913D0D2A1F3B8BBDF4D5E7281983A4#ref-CR4\">4<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amid this confusion, scientists saw an opportunity. \u201cIf it is real and we\u2019re seeing differences, can we use that as a natural experiment?\u201d says Sarah Stock, who studies maternal and fetal medicine at the University of Edinburgh, UK. Researchers still don\u2019t understand exactly what triggers preterm birth \u2014 the leading cause of infant mortality globally \u2014 or how to prevent it.
