Rolle co-wrote a 2021 paper about stress, burnout and \u2018John Henryism\u2019 in the STEM workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Science tends to attract people who want to get to the bottom of important questions, but few things in science are ever fully solved, says Rolle. \u201cThat level of curiosity can keep you on a hamster wheel,\u201d she says. \u201cThe finish line isn\u2019t strongly defined unless you define it for yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Henryism is a term that particularly applies to under-represented groups, who feel an especially intense pressure to perform, she adds. \u201cYou are in a competitive field, but you\u2019re constantly getting these messages that you aren\u2019t good enough, that you shouldn\u2019t be here, that you barely made the cut.
