{"id":7768,"date":"2022-10-21T11:09:19","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T16:09:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.une.edu\/research\/?p=7768"},"modified":"2022-10-21T11:09:20","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T16:09:20","slug":"une-hosts-first-statewide-symposium-on-biomedical-research-and-engineering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.une.edu\/research\/une-hosts-first-statewide-symposium-on-biomedical-research-and-engineering\/","title":{"rendered":"UNE hosts first statewide symposium on biomedical research and engineering!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The University of New England welcomed the state\u2019s top biomedical researchers in a celebration of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/medicine\/2022-symposium\/\">world-class research and innovation<\/a>&nbsp;at the first annual Maine Research Symposium on Biomedical Science and Engineering, held Oct. 13 to 15 at the University\u2019s Portland Campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event \u2014 jointly organized by UNE, the University of Maine, the University of Southern Maine (USM), the Roux Institute, Jackson Laboratory, Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory (MDIBL), MaineHealth, and Northern Light Health \u2014&nbsp;was held in UNE\u2019s Innovation Hall and drew more than 200 researchers in a showcase of Maine\u2019s growing leadership in the increasingly important field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe biomedical industry has evolved, and our Maine institutions have developed to the point where we can realistically tackle many of the challenges that seemed insurmountable not long ago,\u201d UNE President James D. Herbert, Ph.D., said in an address to the crowd. \u201cAnd so, we convene, brought together by a shared commitment to building a healthier, stronger Maine, and, indeed, a healthier, stronger world through innovation in the biomedical sciences and engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUNE is committed to supporting and facilitating the research that makes biomedical breakthroughs possible,\u201d Herbert continued. \u201cAs such, it is truly an honor for us to welcome so many individuals who are leading the way in this area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the symposium\u2019s many highlights \u2014&nbsp;including dozens of presentations related to research on public health and rural disparities, artificial intelligence, health care solutions, and innovations in biomedical technology \u2014&nbsp;were remarks by U.S. Sen.
