We’re partnering with institutions in Biddeford (Banded; Elements) and Portland (TBD) to host monthly science events. Real life scientists from UNE will give a short public presentation followed by a Q&A. We are looking for volunteers to help us launch this initiative. Are you willing to participate? If so, please let Mike Burman (mburman@une.edu) and Tara Riley (triley3@une.edu) know. Pass this along to other scientist colleagues you know that might be interested!

FAQs (although no one has actually asked a question yet):

What’s the format for the talks?

That’s up to you. Different types of science are amendable to different types of presentations. We’ll have audio/visual systems available for you use if you’d like. We’re thinking very short, engaging, high-level, presentations might work best. Sometimes it might even work best to present in groups of related topics. Interactivity is a plus. The real action will probably be in the Q&A. The Maine Science Festival’s 5-min genius talks are probably a good place to start, but maybe you have something else in mind.

I’m nervous about presenting to the public, can I have help?

Yes! Mike Burman is happy to work with you on your presentation to ensure that it is well suited for the public. He has been trained by the Society for Neuroscience (and UNE) to do this. You can also probably walk down the hall and consult other colleagues too.

Do I have to be a neuroscientist to participate?

No! While this is hosted by the CEN and we’ll likely try to prioritize brain-related science at first, this is open to anyone at UNE who is doing compelling science. We’re defining science broadly and collaborations are encouraged.

When are the events occurring?

There is a lot of enthusiasm from our partners and the scheduling seems flexible. We’ll work with you on the date and time. We could roll this out any time, so we’re especially looking for volunteers for summer.

Thanks!

Mike

—

Michael A Burman Ph.D.
Professor of Psychology

Director, School of Social and Behavioral Sciences

University of New England

328 Decary Hall
207-602-2301
mburman@une.edu
https://sites.une.edu/burmancollaborative

Pronouns: He/Him/His

Dear Colleagues, I’m excited to announce that the Center for Excellence in Neuroscience is launching a …

[36
["post-9485","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-faculty-development
["GET
