What is a story slam?
A story slam is a live storytelling competition. People will tell a short story of their own to an audience. There is usually a theme that the stories are based on. The theme for UNE’s 2023 healthcare story slam is “silver lining.” A silver lining is a sign of hope or other positive aspect in an otherwise negative or challenging situation. Specifically, for this story slam the silver linings will be ones found within healthcare settings.
Does my story have to be polished to apply to be a Storyteller?
Not at all! All you need is an idea and an inspiration. You’ll work with our storytelling coach to hone and polish your story before taking the stage on April 18.
Will I have to memorize my story, or can I just read it from my notes?
Stories are much more engaging when the storyteller is speaking from the heart, and that’s the Story Slam style. Our storytelling coach will give you some tips to make that easier and way less scary!
Do I have to work in the health care field to be eligible to be a storyteller?
Nope! We all engage in healthcare in some way or other, so if you have a story you think would be a good fit, please apply! We’re looking for a variety of stories, and a variety of people to tell them.
My story is sad. Is that OK?
Yes, absolutely. We’ll work with you to find the best way to tell it. After all, it’s hard to find a silver lining without some rain clouds.
My story is funny. Is that OK?
Yes, absolutely! We want all kinds of stories for the Story Slam.
My story involves a patient, and I’m worried about confidentiality. What do I do?
Please submit your story idea without any information that could identify a third party. As you’re developing your story, we’ll work with you to change personally-identifying information so you can tell it without betraying confidentiality.
