The Power of Storytelling with Maps

The University of New England is excited to support a new program being created for Maine Public Television: Elevating Voices. This series will showcase minority-owned businesses in Maine. In support of this effort, we are looking for a team of 2-3 interested UNE students to use the data collected by the Greenlight team to create a GIS Story map. Story Maps are a way to “harness the power of maps to tell stories that matter”. In this project, students will be creating an inspiring, immersive story of minority-owned businesses in Maine by combining text, interactive maps, and other multimedia content. With the support of UNE’s Communications department – the team will be creating a Story Map that we will provide to the Greenlight team in hopes of making the data available to residents of the state of Maine and beyond.

Interested in joining the student team?

What kind of experience do students need? We are looking for students who are reliable, enthusiastic about the project, and able to commit to completing this project in the next two months. At least one team member should have experience with creating GIS Story Maps. An interest in marketing and visual communication would also be helpful. This is a great resume-building opportunity for the right team.

Elevating Voices
Greenlight Maine begins a new series this year highlighting minority-owned businesses. Elevating Voices features 12 companies over 6 special episodes airing in March and April 2021. This is not a competition, but a feature program showcasing these businesses to elevate and support various ethnic backgrounds across our great state and the contributions they make to Maine’s economy. Participants receive a grant of $5,000 from Bangor Savings Bank, as well as visibility for their featured business.
