Mission Statement
UNE students are creating the next wave in sustainable snacking! The SeaMade Bar project is driving innovation through hands-on learning across the sciences, nutrition, business, design, and entrepreneurship, using seaweed harvested from our coastal campus in Biddeford, Maine.
Letter to Our Community

At Seamade, our mission is to build a better food system by bringing together the people who make it possible. As students at the University of New England, we have worked on this kelp-based energy bar to nourish our fellow peers, support our campus partners like Parkhurst Dining, and work together with the Seamade innovation team dedicated to thoughtful research, transparent ingredients, and responsible production.
Beyond campus, we are proud to work with seaweed farmers and ingredient suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability, ocean health, and ethical sourcing. We are equally inspired by the broader community we hope to serve—educating consumers about the nutritional power of kelp and the positive environmental impact of seaweed farming. By connecting students, farmers, partners, and community members through one simple bar, Seamade aims to prove that delicious food can also be nutritious, regenerative, community-driven, and part of a healthier future for people and the planet.
The Seamade Bar isn’t just a snack, it’s a learning experience shaped by the creativity, curiosity, and collaboration of students at the University of New England. Through hands-on research, product development, students gain real-world experience while exploring how food innovation can support a healthier planet. We are grateful to the students who have contributed their time, ideas, and passion to this project, helping to build Seamade into what it is today.
As the bar continues to evolve, we look forward to future students continuing this work, bringing new perspectives and ideas that continue to strengthen innovation, sustainability, and community.

Student Testimonials
“The SeaMade project has been a great hands-on opportunity to see the process of developing a product and moving it to market. As part of the SeaMade team, we have been able to see every step that goes into this project, from making the bar in the kitchen to creating marketable content to help promote the bar. The process is very interdisciplinary and has touched on various interests of each team member, inevitably creating a great learning experience.”
“One of my favorite aspects of the SeaMade project has been applying what I’ve learned about sustainability and nutrition to a real, tangible product. Working as part of a team- each member contributing unique perspectives toward the shared goal of developing sustainable kelp bars- has been an especially meaningful experience.”
