2020-2021 Student Mentors (part 2)

Meet the rest of the School of Pharmacy’s peer mentors and read their advice for P1 students. If you didn’t catch the pearls of wisdom from last week’s group, you can read that here.

Kate Gosling

Kate is from Chatham, New Jersey. Her hobbies include Crossfit and nutrition. She wants to become an Emergency Department Pharmacist. She went to undergrad at Bucknell University.
On campus, Kate is involved in Rho Chi, Phi Lambda Sigma, SSHP, ASHP, and IPHO. Off campus, she is involved in Crossfit MF.
Fun Fact: Kate has a French Bulldog.
Advice for new students: “Find a passion outside of school and make time for it every single day no matter how much school work you have!”
Favorite thing about Maine: Outdoor activities… hiking, going to beaches, etc.


Michaela Myerson

Michaela is from North Andover, Massachusetts. Her hobbies include traveling, eating her way through Portland, and photography. Her passion is serving underserved populations. She went to undergrad at the George Washington University (GW) in DC.
Michaela is involved in her class e-board (Class President), Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA), Phi Lambda Sigma, Alpha Zeta Omega, the Infectious Disease Association, student tutoring in SASC, and does breast cancer research. Off campus, she does work for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and works at Walgreens as a Pharmacy Intern.
Favorite thing about Maine: The people here. Everyone is so open-hearted.
Advice for new students: “Study a little bit every day, believe in yourself (you can do this), and take time off from school. Making time for the things you love OUTSIDE of everything you do at school will keep you sane.”


Melvin J. Rivera-Hernández

Melvin is from Puerto Rico. He is passionate about staying true to himself and finding ways to grow not only as a professional, but at a personal/spiritual level. His hobbies include cooking, gaming (video games/board games), reading, finding new places to eat and visit, and dabbling into zodiacs and astrology. He went to undergrad at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus. Melvin did a Master’s Degree in Industrial Pharmacy at the School of Pharmacy in the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus.
Melvin is involved the Rho Chi Society (President), Alpha Zeta Omega (Sub-Directorum), Phi Lambda Sigma (Treasurer), Dean’s Ambassadors, American Pharmacist Association (APhA-ASP), National Pharmaceutical
Association (SNPhA), and the Infectious Diseases Association. He is also the Class of 2022 student representative at the College of Pharmacy Assessment and Evaluation Committee.
Advice for new students: “Dedicate these 4 years to build a better, more refined version of yourself who is comfortable with messing up every now and then. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and
putting yourself in situations you never imagined you would be a part of. You’d be surprised of how much you will grow professionally, personally, and spiritually.”


Marlee Smith

Marlee is from Sanford, Maine. Her hobbies include gardening, playing board games, hanging out with her family, and of course cats! She went to undergrad at University of Southern Maine.
Marlee is involved in her class e-board (Class Secretary) Alpha Zeta Omega, Phi Lambda Sigma, Rho Chi, Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists and Dean’s Ambassadors, and volunteers as a HART Animal Shelter Medication Technician.
Favorite thing about Maine: Enjoying all four seasons
Fun Fact: Marlee worked at Dunkin Donuts for 4 years, and now has a coffee addiction to prove it.
Advice for new students: “Get to know your faculty! Everyone wants to see you succeed and are willing to help. Also set time to study in your schedule even during weeks that the workload may be light.”


Brianna Gower

Bri is from Buxton, Maine. Her hobbies include cooking and video games. When she becomes a PharmD, she wants to work mainly in medication therapy management (MTM) or medication reconciliation (med rec). She went to undergrad at UNE. Bri is involved in her class e-board (Class Treasurer), Rho Chi, Alpha Zeta Omega, SSHP, Infectious Disease Association, APhA, SNPhA, Dean’s Ambassadors and CUP Scholars. She
serves on the SNPhA Diversity Event Committee.
Fun Fact: Bri has never been on a plane!
Favorite thing about Maine: The colors of nature seem so bright, even in the winter.
Advice for new students: “Form a study group early on but don’t be afraid to change it if it’s not working for you!”


Emily Poirier

Emily is from Windham, New Hampshire and went to UNE undergrad. Her hobbies include hiking, kayaking, and spending time with friends.
She is involved with the Industry Pharmacists Organization (IPhO), National
Community Pharmacy Association (NCPA), Kappa Psi, and does HIV research.
Favorite thing about Maine: “So many amazing beaches.”
Advice for new students: “Branch out and meet new people even if you already have friends from undergrad. Also become involved in organizations early on so that you can add leadership skills to your resume.”


Nicole St. Louis

Nicole is from Biddeford, Maine and loves being outside and running. She also enjoys going camping during the summer. Nicole went to UNE where she completed 2 years of pre-pharmacy. Once she graduates from pharmacy school she hopes to work in community pharmacy here in Maine.
Nicole is involved with APhA, Rho Chi, and she is a Dean’s Ambassador. Outside of school she works as an intern at Hannaford Pharmacy in Biddeford.
Fun fact: “I love to watch football and am a huge New England Patriots fan!”
Advice for new students: “Get to know your professors. All of the teachers here at UNE are very supportive and a great resource”.
