Interprofessional APPE in Northern Maine by Dr. M. Fiori

Students who complete an Advanced Pharmacy Practice Rotation (APPE) rotation at Northern Light Family Medicine and Residency in Bangor, ME work collaboratively with healthcare professionals from different areas of the field. Pharmacy students work in tandem with medical resident physicians, medical students, social work students to optimize patient medication regimens and improve patient care. They meet weekly with medical students in a rounding style discussion to review patients who will be seen in the clinic the following day. During that discussion, the pharmacy students provide an assessment and recommendations for the patient based on complex disease states. Pharmacy students also have the unique opportunity to work collaboratively with other members of the healthcare team daily, as they often stop by to ask questions about patients who are being seen in the clinic on the day of the appointments.
