AHEC Scholars – Community Engagement Expo

In September of this year, Maine AHEC welcomed 49 new participants into the AHEC Scholars program, exceeding the goal of 45.  Newly enrolled scholars include students in Osteopathic Medicine, Allopathic Medicine, Pharmacy, Dental Medicine, Physician Assistant, and Physical Therapy programs. This year Maine AHEC Network partnered again with MCD Global to enroll Community Health Workers into the program.

In October, the new cohort of Scholars participated in a Community Engagement Expo where they learned about the healthcare landscape in Maine and heard directly from local community organizations addressing healthcare needs in the state of Maine. Representatives from Portland Public Health, Greater Portland Health, and the Maine Mobile Health Program delivered presentations to the group, discussing the services and resources they provide to their communities. Scholars were also able to take a tour of the Maine Mobile Health clinic, an “FQHC on wheels” that travels to different areas of the state to provide healthcare to communities who experience access challenges. Scholars also participated in interprofessional activities, facilitated by UNE’s Center for Advancing Interprofessional Education and Practice (CAIEP), to learn about interprofessional collaboration and team work.
