Maine AHEC is excited to launch a new community-based learning experience for health professions students with Greater Portland Health (GPH), a Federally Qualified Health Center serving the communities of southern and central Maine. This partnership between Maine AHEC and GPH will begin in early Spring 2026 with opportunities for students to participate in vaccination events, outreach on the GPH mobile health van, and providing health promotion, education, active listening and engagement with patients at GPH’s homeless health care clinic events.

Integrating health professions students into GPH activities is a collaborative initiative where Maine AHEC and GPH came together with the goal of supporting clinic operations and sharing the unique approach of a community health clinic with future health care providers. Students will have the chance to serve some of Maine’s most vulnerable populations and consider the impact of social drivers of health.
GPH offers a broader range of services than many community health clinics, including primary care, behavioral health, women’s health, medication assisted therapy (MAT) for substance use treatment, and dental care, to all community members regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. They have served the Portland area since 2009.
