- How do I order some kelp bars?

- Who is involved? Why are UNE students producing these?
Through UNE’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Shaw Fellows are given this opportunity to work hands-on with a start up company through areas of business modeling, product development, supply chain and sourcing, and branding and marketing. This allows for students of all majors to take on a leadership role within the company!
- What is the nutritional value of the bars?
The SeaMade bars offer lots of micronutrients that you may not get in your everyday diet including iodine which is essential for thyroid hormone production, regulating growth, development, and biochemical processes. Seaweed is a great source of iodine as well as our other ingredients such as honey, almonds, and cranberries that allow for immune/urinary tract health and much more.
- Do they taste good?
Yes! The bars have honey and brown rice syrup in addition to seaweed, creating a sweet and umami flavor.
- How much do the bars cost?
As of right now, our wholesale pricing is $2.50 per bar with retail pricing at $3.50. For UNE entities, we offer pricing at $2.25 for special events and distribution.
- Where are they made?
UNE’s Teaching Kitchen is a versatile, hands-on learning laboratory where our production team develops, tests, and refines the SeaMade bar recipe.
- How are they made?
Starting off, we measure all of our ingredients, roast our dry ingredients and boil our wet ingredients. From there, we mix them all together, weigh and roll out the mixture within a frame. After freezing the mixture in the frames we cut them with our custom knife and hand seal all of the bars in the wrappers!
- Will there be other flavors?
We are currently testing new recipes including blueberries, pecans, and chocolate. We hope we can soon bring these new flavors to market within the next year!
- Is the wrapper sustainable?
Yes! We pride ourselves in our fully recyclable packaging. We are constantly researching new sustainable packaging options as well!
- Where do you get your seaweed from?
As of right now, we get our seaweed from Maine Coast Sea Vegetables. However, UNE has our own sea farm where we are currently growing the seaweed to use in the bar! We are hoping we can use our own seaweed in the bars after this harvest season!
