Getting to campus just got a little easier and a little more sustainable. This fall, UNE is introducing two new initiatives on the Portland Campus designed to support alternative transportation choices while making more efficient use of limited parking resources: a new carpool parking program and additional EV charging parking spaces.
Reserved Spaces for Carpoolers
Five new carpool parking spaces have been designated in Parking Lot 6 behind the library. Located in a premium area close to campus destinations, these spaces are intended to reward those who share rides and help reduce parking congestion on campus.
To use a carpool space, participants must display a valid UNE parking permit, arrive with at least two occupants, be registered with GoMaine, and complete the daily check-in process by scanning the QR code posted at the spaces. Because participation is verified each day, registration and check-in must be completed every time a carpool space is used.
Carpooling can help commuters save money, reduce emissions, and maximize the use of available parking while building connections with colleagues, classmates, and friends.
Expanded Access to EV Charging
UNE is also increasing charging opportunities for electric vehicle drivers by designating 22 spaces in the Bishop Street lot and 10 spaces behind The Bibby as EV Parking & Charging Only from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
These spaces are equipped with Level 1 charging outlets located on adjacent light posts. Drivers must provide their own charging cords, but the slower charging rate allows vehicles to remain connected for up to eight hours, providing a meaningful charge throughout the workday. For comparison, UNE’s Level 2 charging stations maintain a four-hour parking limit.
After 10:00 a.m., these designated spaces become available to all vehicles, balancing support for EV drivers with efficient use of campus parking throughout the day.
Together, these new programs support UNE’s efforts to reduce transportation-related impacts, encourage sustainable commuting options, and improve the overall parking experience for the Portland Campus community.
