Maker U Workshops

We’re launching a new series of workshops this year! Come build up your toolkit for making and design thinking through fun, hands-on activities ranging from making a flipbook to programming a mini computer!

Current workshops, with more to come!

Intro to Prototyping and the Makerspace (September 3rd, 9:30-11, November 24th, 2-3:30)

Come get familiar with the Makerspace, and get a crash course in rapid prototyping while you’re at it!

Intro to Handsewing (September 15th, 2-3:30, September 17th, 9:30-11)

Have you ever wondered how to repair your clothing? Add buttons or embroidery? Now’s the time! Come learn some simple hand-stitching techniques while making some fun dorm decorations!

Intro to Filmmaking on Digital Cameras (September 22nd, 2-3:30

This workshop will go through the basics of using a digital camera for any video project. We’ll cover important camera settings, exposure, lens choice, and touch on elements of composition and movement. Open to any experience level! Get more confident with your camera or get behind the lens for the first time.

This workshop is being taught by Jenelle Stafford in the Production Studio!

Intro to Technical 3D modelling (Fusion 360) (September 29, 2-3:30, October 1, 9:30-11)

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to make a simple plant pot or vase, with the option to 3D print it! We’ll go over the basics of Fusion 360, as well as learn how to set up a 3D print for success.

Intro to Blender (October 27, 2-3:30, October 29, 9:30-11)

This workshop will be a cursory introduction to Blender, a 3D modelling software similar to what Pixar uses for animation. You will learn how to add and manipulate shapes, add textures, and render images.

Intro to Arduino (November 10, 2-3:30, November 12, 9:30-11)

Learn the basics of how to put together a circuit using an Arduino microcontroller, and then how to control it using code!

Each workshop has a limit of 8 participants, please register at this link!

SIC Workshops

Curious about coding and qualitative data analysis but not sure where to start? This beginner-friendly workshop introduces you to R, an open-source programming language widely used in statistics, research, and data science. No prior coding experience is required!

In this hands-on session, you’ll learn the basics of R and RStudio, including:

  • Navigating the RStudio environment
  • Writing and running your first lines of R code
  • Working with variables and data types
  • Importing and exploring datasets
  • Creating simple visualizations

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a foundation to start using R for your own projects, whether you’re analyzing data for work, school, or personal interest.

Who Should Attend: Absolute beginners, students, researchers, or anyone interested in learning the basics of coding and data analysis using R.

Requirements: Please bring a laptop with R and RStudio installed. Instructions will be sent before the workshop.

Location: Sustainable Innovation Center – Bottom Level of the Girard Marine Science Center – Room 145
