Inventions, discoveries, and creative works that are developed by individuals (including students) at UNE may have commercial as well as scientific and scholarly value! The intent of UNE’s IP function is to
provide incentives that foster creative activity and to help assure that any such intellectual property produced will be exploited for the benefit of the creator(s), UNE, and the public. To help meet these policy objectives, UNE makes available, through its Office of Sponsored Programs, technical and
legal assistance to protect ownership of intellectual property and to aid in its commercial development. This presentation will provide an overview of the UNE Tech Transfer function, and describe the resources that are in place to assist you in this endeavor.
Our discussion will be led by Mr. Todd Keiller, an IP expert who has been working with UNE for more than 10 years. Todd has been providing a “plug in” technology transfer office for a variety of institutions since 1995. He has been the Director of Technology Transfer for Maine Medical Center Research Institute since 2004. In addition, he is the Director Intellectual Property and Innovation at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and assists Baystate Medical, the University of New England, and Clark University with all aspects of their intellectual property. He provides the process to manage any new ideas generated from the faculty. He uses his experience and background to encourage new IP, but also gets commercial feedback in order to prudently manage the expense associated with filing patents. Previously, Todd started and grew the tech transfer program for the University of Vermont and was Vice President, Ventures at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He came from industry where he served in marketing and business development roles in start-ups, early stage companies, and spent 10 years at Corning. He was hired by MTI in 2016 to review all non-profit intellectual activity in Maine, and currently serves on the Board of the Maine Center for Entrepreneurial Development..
