The University Awards offer faculty and staff an opportunity to formally recognize and honor the academic excellence and/or outstanding contributions of undergraduate students to the UNE community.
The review committee is comprised of members of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Faculty Assembly Student Affairs Committee, faculty from the College of Business and Westbrook College of Health Professions, and staff from Global Education and Student Affairs.
To facilitate deliberations by the review committee, we request the following from nominators and nominees:
Directions for nominators:
Please limit supporting material for the nomination to a maximum of two pages. In the supporting material, address how the nominee has met the criteria for the individual award, what your relationship is to the nominee (e.g., supervisor, teacher, etc.), and how long you have known the nominee.
Your nominee will also need to submit the required supporting materials: resume or CV, photo, and a copy of their transcript (the unofficial transcript downloaded from UOnline is sufficient). PLEASE TELL YOUR NOMINEE THAT YOU HAVE NOMINATED THEM and encourage them to submit the required materials. Nominees who do not submit all the required materials will not be eligible to receive an award.

Jacques Downs Award for Academic Excellence
Recognizes the most accomplished UNE College of Arts and Sciences graduating senior. Considerations for this award are primarily the student’s academic achievement (overall GPA, number of semesters on the dean’s list, and academic awards and scholarships), scholarly work (original undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity), and service considerations during their UNE career. 2025 Jacques Downs Award for Academic Excellence Nomination Form
Junior Academic Excellence
For any junior who has excelled in their academics. Considerations for this award are primarily the student’s academic achievements (overall GPA, number of semesters on the dean’s list, and academic awards and scholarships), collegiality, and scholarly work (original undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity). Sophomore Academic Excellence
For any sophomore who has excelled in their academics. Considerations for this award are primarily the student’s academic achievements (overall GPA, number of semesters on the dean’s list, and academic awards and scholarships), collegiality, and scholarly work (original undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity). Experiential Education Award
For the Undergraduate who has accomplished professional preparation, civic engagement, and global awareness as critical to their academic career (and liberal arts education) through diverse involvement in experiential education programs offered on the University campus including internship, research, community service, and global education. Involvement in three or more of the above areas is required. Demonstrated leadership in at least two of the above areas is preferred. 2025 Experiential Education Award Nomination Form
Global Education Award
For any student who has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to global citizenship by participating in UNE Global Education Programs, such as semester or year abroad, faculty-led travel course(s), volunteer programs or internship(s) abroad. Examples of the nominee’s global experiences for this current academic year and other years are requested.

Community Service Award
For any student who has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to serve others in the University or greater community. Academic achievement must also have been demonstrated. Student Leader Award
For any student who has demonstrated excellence in leadership at the University. The nominee should demonstrate a commitment to excellence that results in positive change in the University community, possess a balanced collegiate lifestyle, and serve as a role model. Susan J. Hillman Science/Math Education Award
This award is for a UNE College of Arts & Sciences student who shows dedication to STEM education and professional promise as a STEM educator. Students with formal (classroom) or informal (outreach) teaching experience in STEM fields including mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, neuroscience, environmental science, and psychology will be considered. Student Researcher/Scholar Awards
Sponsored by the UNE Office of Research and Scholarship, the Student Researcher/Scholar Awards recognize three undergraduate students and two graduate students for their excellence in research/scholarship. To be considered for an award, a student must be nominated by the faculty mentor or advisor.
