David Livingstone Smith presented a paper setting out his theory of ideology at a conference on Structural Oppression and the Road to Justice sponsored by the Leibniz-Zentrum Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft (ZAS) in Berlin. Smith’s paper, titled “selection for oppression” reconsiders functional accounts of ideology in light of competing biological analyses of function.
