Ron Hills speaks on microbiome and chronic disease at UnityPoint Health – Meriter

Ron Hills, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Administration, was invited to deliver virtual grand rounds at the Madison, Wisconsin area hospital system. To help better treat their patients suffering from obesity and metabolic disease, physicians have received a year’s worth of expert talks training them on recent advances in diet and nutrition. Six months in planning, Dr. Hills was asked to present on the following learning objectives:

  1. Explain the gut microbiome’s role in development of diabetes, obesity, NAFLD, inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, depression and cardiovascular disease.
  2. Describe treatment effectiveness of prebiotics, probiotics and fecal transplants.
  3. Describe how diet quality, carbohydrate intake, fermentable FODMAPs, and prebiotic fiber maintain healthy gut flora.
  4. Explain how different, popular diets affect the gut microbiome.

Working under the direction of Dr. Hills for the summer, Doctor of Pharmacy candidate Stephanie Sgueglia conducted an analysis of the research literature in preparation for the presentation.
