Salem 1692: A Debate – Monday, 10/31, 3:30 to 5:00, St. Francis Room, Biddeford Campus Library

In 1692, Salem, Massachusetts, Twenty people were executed for the crime of witchcraft, several died in jail, hundreds were accused and arrested. Why Salem? Why then? Five student teams will each present an explanation for what stimulated the worst witch hunt in American History. Poisoned grain? Aggression seeking an outlet? Pressures from the Indian Wars? Long-standing feuds and grudges? Disenfranchised girls? The audience will decide which team has made the most persuasive argument. Refreshments, too!
