The COBRE Center for the Study of Pain and Sensory Function is calling for
proposals for pilot projects related to understanding the neurobiology of chronic pain. Projects should be aimed at acquiring preliminary data for NIH R01/R15/R21 /SBIR/STTR or comparable grant applications and for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Collaborative projects are encouraged (multiple principal investigator applications are allowed). Additionally, applicants should indicate how their project utilizes the COBRE Histology and Imaging Core and/or Behavior Core facilities.

Funding can be approved for up to a two-year period; however, continuation of the funding after the first year is contingent upon success in meeting project goals, clear efforts toward submitting and publishing manuscripts, and the feasibility that the research project will develop into a fundable NIH application. Researchers will be required to submit a progress report prior to the end of the first year outlining progress made to date, any manuscripts published, in press, or under review, and how the data acquired will contribute to an NIH application. External Advisory Committee will review submitted applications before a funding decision is made. The earliest start date for funding is September 1, 2020.
Applications must be submitted by email to Jennifer Malon (Jmalon@une.edu) no later than 5:00 pm on August 1, 2020.
Applications should be completed on the downloaded forms provided and include the following:
- Project Title and Summary: Includes a brief description of how the project relates to the overarching theme of the neurobiology of chronic pain and the specific aims.
- Research Plan: 3-page limit. Includes A) Specific Aims, B)
Background/Significance, C) Experimental Design/Approach, D) Expected Outcomes, E) a Timeline for Completion, and F) Vertebrate Animal Section (if applicable). - NIH Biosketches for all major personnel and collaborators.
- Budget: Funds are intended to sustain research necessary for publication and acquisition of external funding. A maximum of $60,000 for applications with one PI and $75,000 for multi-PI applications can be requested. COBRE funds may be used for lab supplies and salaries, including summer salaries, student salaries, and technician salaries.
Please note: IACUC/ IRB approval is not required for grant submission but will be required prior to release of funds.
