Frequently a response to an injury or a marker of illness, pain is often a complex problem that can be difficult to evaluate, diagnose, and effectively treat.  Recent figures estimate that approximately 20% of adults suffer from pain globally and that 10% are diagnosed with chronic pain annually.  Researchers, however, are opening up new avenues in our understanding of the mechanistic underpinnings of pain, genetic components, diagnostics, as well as emerging therapies (particularly those that go beyond the traditional opioid drugs, or have non-addictive properties).

This 2-day conference will bring together international academic and industry researchers from diverse disciplines that include neuroscience/neurobiology, pharmacology, physiology, genetics/genomics, anesthesiology, psychology, and more, to explore the novel mechanisms underlining pain conditions and recent diagnostic/treatment progress.  Featuring a keynote address, plenary lectures, and poster presentations, the scientific agenda will present emerging basic and translational research in the following areas: dissection of central pain circuits, genetics of pain, biomarkers of pain, emerging therapies for pain, neuro-immune and auto-immune mechanisms, sex and ethnic differences in pain, and innovations in the identification and development of new therapeutic targets for pain.
