Congratulations to UNE’s newest Goldwater Scholar, Katelyn (Katie) DeWater!

The results of the 2024 Goldwater Scholarship competition were announced on Friday and UNE was one of three institutions in Maine to have a scholar named!

Our newest Goldwater Scholar is Katelyn (Katie) DeWater, a Marine Science-Marine Biology major (minors in Applied Math and GIS). Katie has been working with Will Kochtitzky (Assistant Professor, SMEP) and Jeri Fox (Associate Professor, SMEP) on the impact of climate change on coral reefs, among other projects. Katie has also worked in the Makerspace to help build a camera that measures coral fluorescence which is an indicator of reef health and took that to Belize this past January as part of Dr. Fox’s travel course.
