Dr. Diana Goode was an invited speaker at the 49th Maine Biological and Medical Sciences Symposium (MBMSS) April 23, 2022

Katharina Roese (MS in Biology, 2022) presented a poster from her MS work in Burkholder’s Lab.

Poster title:  Pyrogallol exhibits antimicrobial adjuvant properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Poster authors included: Katharina Roese (MS in Biology, expected summer 2022), Lauren Cooper (BS in Medical Biology expected May 2022), Afnan Yahya (BS in Medical Biology expected May 2022) and Kristin Burkholder (Associate Professor, School of Biological Sciences).

Research description:  Kati’s project examines the potential for phenolic compounds to increase efficacy of existing antibiotics against drug-resistant Staphylococci.  She has found that the compound pyrogallol improves antimicrobial activity of the drugs linezolid and cefoxitin against two important species of Staphylococcus.  These adjuvant effects may be linked to pyrogallol-induced bacterial oxidative stress.
