Tamara King, New Director of the COBRE Behavior Core

Dear fellow researchers,

I am writing as the new Director of the COBRE Behavior Core. I am excited to take on this role and work with you. There is a lot of exciting work being done here at UNE.

I wanted to reintroduce the team so that everyone knows who we are, contact points regarding services, and who will be performing the services.

Tamara King, Director. I have many years of experience in use, creation and validation of behavioral assays in rodents to examine questions relating to pain, learning and memory, and opioid withdrawal. I can be contacted with any questions regarding services that we can offer and how they may fit into your area of research. In addition, I am happy to meet with anyone to explore how we may improve our services.

Kerry Tucker, Co-director. Kerry has many years of experience in in the design, engineering, breeding, genotyping, and experimental analysis of transgenic and embryonic stem cell-derived mutant mouse lines. He has focused most of his career on the use of the mouse as a model organism to study central and peripheral nervous system development. He will oversee the genotyping services.

Denise Giuvelis, Core Manager. Denise has been the Behavior Core Manager twice, 2008-2014 and recruited back in 2017. Denise has many years of experience in models and behavioral measures of pain, addiction, learning and memory, and behavioral pharmacology required for development of novel compounds for in vivo use.

Victoria Eaton, Behavior Core Technician. Victoria is a UNE alum who worked in Dr. Burman’s laboratory during undergraduate. After graduation, Victoria became the lab manager for my laboratory for 3 years. She has many years of experience in models and behavioral measures of pain.

Bradley Best, Behavior Core Technician-Genotyping Services. Brad has experience in DNA/RNA purification, PCR, Taqman™ gene analysis, DNA sequencing, plasmid purification, western blot, in situ hybridization, and cell culture. In the BC, Mr. Best is in charge of the genotyping service performing DNA extraction & purification, PCR, primer design, protocol optimization, and protocol documentation/dissemination.

The Behavior Core directors are available for consult on any projects that you may want to discuss. The behavior core offers space and equipment for surgeries, in vivo testing, tissue collection and genotyping. Please consult Denise or myself regarding inclusion of personnel on IACUC protocols for any behavior or sample collection services that you wish to have the behavior core perform.

All requests for behavior or genotyping services should be sent to behaviorcore@une.edu using the attached forms. Denise will receive the forms and work with the appropriate personnel to schedule the requests. I have attached the forms for your convenience.

Requests for space and equipment will continue to be managed through calendar sign ups set up by Denise. We note that there are new key card entry systems installed in Stella Maris. Access to calendars, space and equipment will be dependent on training by the Behavior Core staff.

We greatly look forward to the coming year. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Tamara
