Call for applications for the 2022 College of Arts and Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program – Due by 12 PM, Monday, February 7th, 2022

Dear Colleagues,

I’m delighted to announce the call for applications for the 2022 College of Arts and Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program. The 2022 SURE program will run from May 23-August 12, 2022. Applications are due by noon on Monday, February 7th, 2022. Please note that a maximum of four student applications are permitted per faculty member/PI; if more than 4 students from your group want to apply for a SURE award, please use a pre-screening or other internal process. The applications will be reviewed by the CASFA Undergraduate Research Committee and recommendations will be made to the CAS Dean’s Office.  We anticipate notifying students before Spring Break (Friday, March 11th).

As in previous years, this call is being sent to faculty and professional staff to share with interested students (a general call for applications is not sent to students directly).

There are multiple parts to the application:

  • STUDENTS complete this form which includes entry of standard information and a place to upload a 3 page research essay. Details about the research essay (content/prompts/format/etc.) and the SURE program in general are in the form (scroll down to preview).
  • RESEARCH ADVISORS complete this form which includes entry of standard information and a place to upload a 2 page recommendation letter. Details about the recommendation letter (content/prompts/format/etc.) and the SURE program in general are in the form (scroll down to preview).

New this year! The Friends of Scarborough Marsh (FOSM) has partnered with the SURE program to provide additional funding for selected projects whose area of study involves the Scarborough Marsh, the largest salt marsh area in Maine. Research projects should address some topic of interest relevant to the mission of FOSM (conservation, protection, restoration, and enhancement). For more information about the Scarborough Marsh, including examples of previous and current research projects undertaken at the Marsh, visit https://www.scarboroughmarsh.org. (Students may opt-in for consideration of this award.)

Please share the student form with your interested students and let Erinn Stetson (estetson@une.edu) or me know if you have any questions.

My best,

Amy
