Deveau elected chair of National Council of Undergraduate Research Chemistry Division

Amy Deveau, Ph.D.

Dr. Amy Deveau, associate professor of chemistry in the Department of Chemistry & Physics, was elected as Chair of the Chemistry Division of the Council of Undergraduate Research (CUR).  Dr. Deveau’s two year term began in June 2020.

Dr. Deveau has served as Councilor in the CUR Chemistry Division for 7 years, over three consecutive terms. In addition to contributing to the Internationalization and Posters on the Hill committees at the organizational level, Dr. Deveau recently chaired the Division’s Mentoring Task Force.  In this role, Deveau led the development and implementation of the Division’s “Outstanding Mentorship Award”.  The national award recognizes chemical educators who have demonstrated exceptional mentoring and advising across all realms of undergraduate research policy, practice, and administration utilizing diversity and inclusion best practices.

Dr. Silvia Ronco, Program Director of the Cottrell Scholars Program at Research Corporation for Science Advancement  and current President of the Council on Undergraduate Research elaborates: “Amy has become a true leader within the CUR community. Her contributions in the Chemistry Division made her a natural choice as the incoming Chair. Amy stands out as a community builder, a passionate mentor and a trusted colleague, with clear objectives for the organization and for her own professional journey.”

In Deveau’s term as Division Chair, she plans to work with colleagues to expand partnerships with other professional organizations, increase advocacy for undergraduate research to funding agencies, evolve CUR Chemistry’s leadership on diversity and inclusivity in the chemical sciences, and develop electronic and virtual resources for aspiring undergraduate research mentors.
