The Fulbright Distinguished Arctic Scholar Award 2023-24
The Arctic Scholar is one of the Fulbright Distinguished Scholar awards; these are among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program.
U.S. citizens who have a scholarly focus on polar and High North issues, a Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree as appropriate, and a significant publication and teaching record are eligible to apply for an Arctic Scholar award. The Arctic award for U.S. scholars is a three month grant to do research and lecture any institution of higher education or research in Norway. One award is given to a U.S. scholar each year. Although Fulbright Arctic Scholar funding is for three months, the grantee may stay beyond the grant period.
This award supports research and teaching within areas that are relevant to understanding of the Arctic and High North regions. The Distinguished Scholar is expected to engage with faculty inside and outside the host institution(s), give public lectures and lead seminars, as well as supervise and mentor Master’s and Ph.D. candidates with their research and writing. Details about award activity should be worked out with the host.
Terms of this grant include:
1. Maintenance grant of NOK 200.000 for 3 months. This amount will cover maintenance and housing for the grantee in Norway. There is no additional financial support for dependents, but family members may accompany grantee to the site.
2. Allowance of NOK 25.000,- for round-trip international travel, including excess baggage allowance, shipping costs, etc. for grantee only.
