The kickoff to summer is an exciting time of year — especially if you’re a student transitioning from high school to college this fall. Celebration of what you’ve accomplished paired with anticipation for what’s ahead can make this a truly special time, so soak it in! And once those tossed graduation caps start to settle, here are a few important steps to take this summer so you’re ready for UNE this fall!
1 – Sign Up and Attend Orientation
New student orientation prepares you for everything you need to know about becoming a Nor’easter — from navigating academics to making campus connections. Attendance is required for all incoming students, whether you’re a first-time college student or a transfer student.

First-Year Student Orientation Sessions

Transfer Student Orientation
- Aug 29, 2023
At orientation, you can expect to meet with academic advisors, review your class schedule, learn about UNE services, become familiar with campus, and make connections with other incoming and current students.
Current graduating senior Justin offered some insight into his first-year orientation experience at UNE:
“During orientation, you get put into small groups with other incoming students and a few upperclassmen who are orientation leaders. In my experience, I made a lot of friends in my small group — I still talk with some of them today. And several of the orientation leaders I had took me under their wing. Throughout my time at UNE, they helped me get a lot of leadership positions and gave me great advice over the years. All those connections really started in my first summer.”
2 – Consider Adding a Trailblazer Trip to Your Orientation Experience
Trailblazer trips are optional, but highly recommended. These overnight, off-campus trips vary from whole-self wellness with yoga and meditation to outdoor adventures with kayaking and hiking. Trailblazers are divided into three “levels” so you can choose what’s right for you.
- Level 1: Accessible to all with indoor sleeping accommodations. Theme options include: Wellness Wayfarer, Mainely Coastal, White Mountain Ramble, and Western Maine Waters.
- Level 2: Entry-level outdoor trips. You’ll need to be comfortable sleeping in a tent. Theme options include: Kayak Quest, White Mountain Ramble, Coastal Communities, and Western Maine Waters.
- Level 3: Intermediate outdoor trips. Be prepared for more physically strenuous activities. Theme options include: Nomadic Nor’easters, Mainely Coastal, and Awesome Adirondacks.

3 – Complete Your Housing and Dining Contract
If you haven’t completed your Housing and Dining application, here is your reminder to do so. The application is where you’ll request a roommate or fill out a roommate matching survey, choose your residence hall preferences, and decide on your meal plan. Housing assignments are made in priority order based on the date your application is received.
Applications are due by July 1, 2023. Visit une.edu/newnoreasters to complete your application. Housing assignments will be released by July 17, 2023.
4 – Submit Your Health Forms
Visit une.edu/studenthealth to complete and submit the following: Immunization Form, Physical Form, and proof of Health Insurance. This information is due by July 1, 2023.
